Why isn't the sound on some of my downloaded videos working?

I download most of my things from ares, and there was no problem with the sound before, but recently almost half of the videos I download have no sound. I checked the speakers, and everything is working as it should. It says that i need a codex, but i don't know which one will help, and i don't really want to spend money. thanks.
