Why do amphetamines make you feel thirsty?

Is this due to the alteration of neurotransmitters in the brain, which causes a sensation of thirst, or is this due to an actual physiological need for water exacerbated by the drug? I ask this because it also decreases sensations of hunger, yet your body obviously still requires food.
